He Calms the Storm

Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble. And he brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, so that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; so, He guides them to their desired haven.
Psalm 107:28-30 (NKJV)
As a young child, I looked forward to spending a week of summer with my friends at our church’s overnight camp. The site, located along beautiful lake Guntersville in North Alabama, epitomized everything you would expect from a rustic campground nestled in the trees. We made crafts, played games, went swimming, performed skits, and attended Bible lessons and worship sessions. We enjoyed spending time with our friends. The love and calm atmosphere helped us feel safe.
One evening, that mood changed. As nighttime neared, the sky darkened, and a storm system developed to the West. We watched the clouds quickly roll in across the lake as lightning filled the sky. At the first close lightning strike, all the children, including myself, screamed and ran down a pine tree-covered hill toward the lake. The counselors yelled for the teen campers to help gather the younger children and guide us to the arts and crafts area—the only underground structure nearby. Still partially open to the elements, the wind whipped our hair. The trees bent and creaked with each strong gust. Tears streamed down our faces as the tornado siren wailed. We clung to each other.
Amid all the chaos, one small voice sang a familiar worship song. “Every time I watch a storm, I know the awesome power of our Lord” (Organ, Phillip. “Every Time” 1994). With each verse, the sobs began to dissipate. More voices joined in until not one person was left crying. While the storm raged around us, we sang praises to our Father. Feeling God’s love and power calmed our hearts until it passed, and we were safe. This event taught us one of the most powerful lessons we learned that summer.
We will face storms during our time on Earth. They may be literal ones like the one I experienced as a child, or they may be emotional, physical, or spiritual in nature. Still the mighty hand who commanded the seas to be still has the power to calm the storms we encounter. However, even if the storm rages on, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us. He is our refuge and strength during times of trouble. We do not need to fear. Instead, we should find joy in the trials. For He promises that everything works together for the good of those who love Him.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for calming the storms that I have already faced in my life. Let Your Holy Spirit fill me with peace and reassurance that I can face future trials with You by my side. Please help me remember that you are with me, and everything will work together for Your purpose.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
